CBD Carrier Oils: Do They Matter?
There are many health and wellness products online and on store shelves nowadays, and all of them promise a solution to increase eager consumers’ wellness or aid in relieving certain ailments. But the one product that is being talked about most around water coolers across the country is CBD.
CBD is short for cannabidiol, which is a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in the hemp plant. This cannabinoid interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system to enhance its functions as it regulates things like physical discomfort and emotional states of mind. Because of CBD’s popularity, and to meet the growing demand of consumers, many new varieties of CBD products have hit retail and online shelves in recent years. Most of these CBD products contain CBD goodness along with some additional ingredients, carrier oils being one of the essential additions.
Four Reasons for Carrier Oils
When you shop for quality CBD products, either online or at your local CBD retailer, you are going to find a large selection of products that deliver this amazing wellness solution either orally (in the form of an oil, softgel, or other edible), through the lungs (by either smoking or vaping the CBD hemp flower), or topically (by applying a balm or salve directly to the skin). If you look, you will notice that oral and topical products include some type of carrier oil in the ingredients. There are four reasons for that.
Reason One: To Get the Dosage Right
After CBD is extracted from the hemp plant, the natural resulting form of the derived CBD is in tiny crystals. Because the CBD is in a crystalline form, it is measured in milligrams. If you’ve ever measured very small amounts of a substance (in science class or at any other time), you know that the difference between one milligram and ten milligrams is minuscule. It is almost undetectable to the human eye. Therefore, if you try to measure out CBD crystals for ingestion, even the slightest variance could make a significant difference in the dosage.
By expertly dissolving precisely measured CBD crystals in a liquid form, you can be assured that the strength of the solution doesn’t vary from one drop to the next. When added to salves and balms, the phytocannabinoid-rich CBD is evenly distributed throughout the product so that measured amounts are applied to the skin.
Reason Two: It Keeps Your CBD Fresh
CBD dissolved in an oil solution keeps the CBD safe and fresh for extended periods of time. If you think of the oils on your grocer’s shelves, such as olive oil, coconut oil, or any variety of vegetable oil, they last for long periods of time without the need for refrigeration. By placing the CBD in a carrier oil, the resulting product stays viable and effective for increased periods of time.
Reason Three: Carrier Oils Provide Other Benefits
The human body loves the natural fats that are provided in many different kinds of plant-based oils. Here are some of the most common carrier oils that are used with CBD along with their additional known health benefits:
- Hemp Seed Oil – Not to be confused with CBD oil, which is also derived from hemp, this oil is rich in antioxidants and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.
- MCT Oil – MCT Oil (Medium-Chain Triglyceride) is extracted from coconuts and palm. This oil has a high concentration of fat-soluble compounds and is also known to be naturally helpful. In addition, it has a smooth taste and is friendly to those on the Keto diet.
- Olive Oil – This oil is rich in monounsaturated fats and recognized as a fatty acid staple.
- Grape Seed Oil – Extracted from the seeds found in grapes, this oil is not as abundant as the other oils. However, this oil has a high unsaturated fat content.
Reason Four: CBD Absorption Is Enhanced
Your body responds well to natural, plant-based oils and the beneficial fats that they carry. CBD is a fat-soluble compound, so it readily mixes with oils better than it does water. This is important because there are two different ways that liquids are absorbed through the gut: water-soluble and fat-soluble.
Water-soluble compounds travel directly through the gut lining and into the bloodstream where they are then carried to other parts of the body.
Fat-soluble compounds, like CBD, can’t go directly through the gut lining and therefore must go through a process where they are formed into tiny droplets called micelles. The micelles then enter the lymph tissue, which is a network of fat-based compounds and immune cells. From there, the micelles travel through the lymph system and enter the bloodstream above the heart. This method of delivery increases the amount of CBD that the body can absorb.
